Dr. Michael J. Hogan (1959-1975) left private practice as a general surgeon
in 1938 to enter the residency program in ophthalmology at UCSF. Afer
further training at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary and Columbia Presbyterian
in N.Y., he served in the Navy during World War II. In 1946 he joined
the faculty in the Ophthalmology Department and became director of the
Proctor Foundation. He rapidly established an international reputation
in ocular pathology, uveitis, and histology. His books Ophthalmic Pathology
(with Dr. Lorenz E. Zimmerman) and Histology of the Human Eye (with Dr.
Jorge Alvarado and Joan Weddell) remain classics. He served 17 years as
Chairman of Ophthalmology. His hobbies were gardening, bird watching,
and swimming everyday in his backyard pool. He is remembered as "Uncle
Mike" by all who knew him.
