Dr. Steven G. Kramer, Theresa and Wayne Caygill Professor, received his
M.D. from Western Reserve University and went to the University of Chicago
for internship, ophthalmology residency, and graduate studies leading
to a Ph.D. in neuro-pharmacology in 1971. After a brief stint on the faculty
at the University of Chicago, he became Chief of Ophthalmology at Madigan
Army Medical Center. From 1973 to 1975 he was Chief of Ophthalmology at
the Veteran's Administration Hospital, San Francisco. Also in 1973 he
joined the faculty at UCSF as a corneal specialist with a research interest
in the field of transplantation technology and ocular cell replacement.
He was appointed Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology 2 years later
at age 34. Under his leadership, the Beckman Vision Center has been created
and the Department of Ophthalmology has doubled in size. Dr. Kramer is
an accomplished magician, upon whom Dionysus has bestowed wisdom, foresight,
and the affection of his faculty, staff, and residents.
