Professional / Research Summary

Refractive Surgery

My research and clinical activities have focused primarily in the area of keratorefractive surgery and practice guideline development. This includes clinical trials for new devices and surgical techniques in this field, as well as developing risk management guidelines and ethical standards for these procedures.

Current projects include the extended follow-up of patients enrolled in the clinical trials forIntacs™ Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments (ICRS). I serve as principal investigator for the Phase II, and III FDA clinical trials for the correction of low to moderate myopia with Intacs™.

Setting Risk Management Guidelines and Ethical Standards for Refractive Surgery.
The elective nature and high patient expectations of refractive surgery present distinctive risk management challenges to ophthalmologists who perform this procedure. I have developed guidelines to assist practicing ophthalmologists in providing comprehensive and medically sound informed consent to their patients in an effective, ethical manner. In the informed consent process for incisional and laser procedures, I have identified patient- centered issues, and presented these in numerous lectures, audiotapes, and publications. I have also developed specific guidelines and recommendations for advertising, considering its effects on the process of informed consent.

My work relating to the ethical practice of refractive surgery includes teaching new skills and techniques, as well as blending of medical care and surgical judgment with business goals and decisions. As the subspecialty of refractive surgery grows, I will continue to emphasize the importance of responsible, ethical behavior, which is paramount for patient care.

Ophthalmic Practice Guidelines As the Physician Director for the Ophthalmic Practice
Division of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, I have had the opportunity to help create standards for improving the quality of eye care for our patients on a national and international level. These practice guidelines are widely used by ophthalmologists in clinical practice and are based on evidence from peer reviewed journals.
