SHAN  LIN, M.D.

Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology

Professional / Research Summary

Cataract and Glaucoma Surgery

Dr. Lin's fields of expertise include glaucoma surgery and lasers, cataract surgery, and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) imaging. He has extensive experience with specialized glaucoma procedures, such as Ahmed valve surgery, endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation (ECP), and selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).
Dr. Lin's research interests include both clinical and laboratory science. He is the Principal Investigator at UCSF for a Phase III FDA clinical trial that is evaluating the safety and efficacy of oral Memantine for the treatment of progressive glaucoma. The results of this large, multi-center trial may lead to an entirely new class of medications for treating this silent, blinding disease. Dr. Lin is also the co-Principal Investigator for the NIH-sponsored Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS). Recently the major results from this nationwide trial were released, showing that treatment of those at risk for developing glaucoma reduced the chance of developing the disease by at least 50%. Additionally, Dr. Lin has laboratory projects to determine the molecular and cellular basis for developing glaucoma.

Dr. Lin is an active member in several medical and scientific societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He serves as an expert for the Glaucoma Panel of the Academy's Ophthalmic Technology Assessment Committee (OTAC). He is also a reviewer for the Journal of Glaucoma and the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
